Please tell me the value of 1879 S Morgan

A jeweler said this is a nice coin in uncirculated condition. He said he would give me 30 and he would sell for 40 dollars.

Looking at ebay completed auctions that seemed more than fair.

I kept the coin but wondered what you all thought it was worth.

What condition is it in?

According to my 2008 "red book" of US coins, prices range from VF-20 at $25 on up to much more. Note that silver is more than it was when this book came out.

There are 2 kinds of 1879S, one where the top arrow feather (that the eagle is clutching) is parallel to the other feathers, and one where it is slanted. The parallel one is more desirable.

I use this site:

http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/mordlr/pricesgd.shtml

For the one with the reverse of 1879:
MS-60 $34
MS-61 $40
MS-62 $40
MS-63 $46
MS-64 $60

Like the guy above me mentioned, you need to determine what the variety is and what the grade is. I think you made a wise move to hold on to it until you learn more about it.

By the way, why did you take it to a jeweler versus a coin shop?

Im guessing since he said he would sell for 40 then he thinks it is ms 61 or ms 62

the arrows are slanted

3rd Reverse (as the book calls it) in MS60 of 1879S is $50 . However, these are 2007-2008 values, you should check out current values if you can. I don't know how the values have changed over the 18 months or so since the book was put together.q

Compare quality of your coin with APMEX, which has this for $25:

Oh that's cool. Here's a little something that should help you identify the reverse variety:

I'll see if I can find an online grading guide for you as well.

Well it's 90% silver, but it's not one ounce of silver. Silver dollars have about 0.7735 troy ounces of silver when freshly minted, so the intrinsic silver value is less than 90% of spot. As of close of biz on Friday with silver spot at $16.06, it has a silver content value of $12.42.

Can you post some pics for us to look at it? Sounds like your dealer may have been off on his offer to you if he based strictly on grade. I do know this though...from talking to dealers in town here, every one of them says the market for Morgans is a bit soft these days. But if you can post a picture of the obverse and reverse, we could take a stab at it. :ok:

No problem. If you have a macro mode on the camera, be sure to use that.

On a side note, if you truly think the coin is MS-67ish, you might want to take it to another dealer for an appraisal or for their opinion of the grade.

Also, at that grade, you may want to consider getting it slabbed by PCGS or NGC both for protection of the coin and certification of the grade for potential resale or insurance purposes. One of your local dealers should be able to send it in for you so that you don't have to join either one just to submit one coin.

I don't know how Tom D does it, but I cannot get a worthy image to show this coin to you.

I could tell this coin dealers eyes lit up and after talking to some locals here, I guess he is one that likes to take advantage of people.

After I took the coin back into my hands, he seemed to respect me more and then admitted that it was a great coin in uncirculated condition.

Didn't ask what grade he would give it.

I will keep looking for a better dealer. Thanks for all the help.

Please keep us posted on this. I am curious now as a big fan of Morgan dollars myself. Those MS-64 or better Morgans sure look nice. :coolbeer:

Anytime. It's great not only for the melt values of coins, but it has alot of interesting links to different coin/bullion/economic articles. It gets updated daily throughout the week for both new articles and the current melt values. It's one of my favorite sites that I check daily. :ok:
